Why Australian Copper is the Benchmark for Large-Scale Projects

Specifying materials for a large commercial project is a different exercise to standard residential jobs. The variables are vast, the consequences of getting it wrong are substantial and the number of people whose work depends on every decision being right is significantly larger. A plumber on a domestic install who encounters a substandard length of tube loses a short period of time, whereas, a contractor on a 40-storey tower with the same problem loses a lot more than that.

This is the context in which Australian copper, and Kembla copper specifically, keeps coming back as the benchmark on large-scale developments because at scale it consistently reduces risk in ways that matter to the people responsible for delivering a building to a standard that holds up for decades.

Consistency

On large projects, the volume of material installed means that consistency is the entire basis on which the timeline of the build runs. A contractor managing a team across multiple floors needs every length of tube to behave predictably. When bending tolerances, joining performance and pressure ratings vary between lengths, even slightly, the accumulation of small adjustments and workarounds across a large installation becomes a measurable drag on productivity and timelines. Tube manufactured from inconsistent or lower-grade raw material introduces variability that trades and contractors absorb in labour time and rework.

Kembla copper tube manufactured at Kembla’s Port Kembla facility is made from only LME Grade A copper cathode from BHP Olympic Dam and manufactured using KemCore Technology, a process that controls wall thickness eccentricity across every length. The result is tube that performs to the same specification from the first length to the last, which on a large project is worth a considerable amount.

Water Safety

In large buildings, the water system is a public health consideration. Hospitals, aged care facilities, hotels, university residences and commercial towers all manage complex water distribution networks serving large numbers of occupants. In these environments, the choice of pipe material is part of the broader water safety picture in a way it simply isn’t on a standard residential job.

Copper has a well-documented passive antimicrobial effect in potable water systems. Copper ions released naturally from the pipe surface are hostile to a range of waterborne bacteria, and this property has been recognised by the World Health Organisation as a meaningful factor in managing waterborne pathogen risk in large building water systems. Along with a properly designed and maintained water safety plan, it represents an advantage in environments where water quality is a serious obligation.

Buildings and systems that last

Large-scale projects are long-term assets. A commercial tower, a hospital, a university building, these are structures with significant service life expectations and the systems inside them are expected to perform across that same horizon.

Specifying copper tube on a project of this scale is a whole-of-life cost decision. Copper systems installed correctly don’t need to be replaced. They don’t degrade in ways that quietly reduce building performance over time. They don’t introduce uncertainty into the long-term maintenance picture for a building owner or asset manager who will be responsible for the asset long after the construction team has moved on.

Compliance and Traceability at Project Scale

The documentation requirements on large commercial and institutional projects have grown significantly. Green Star ratings, asset registers, material provenance requirements, sustainability reporting and the expectations of building owners mean that knowing what’s in the building, where it came from and what standard it was manufactured to is increasingly a non-negotiable part of project delivery.

Kembla copper is CopperMark certified, manufactured to Australian standards and carries GreenTag GreenRate Level A certification. The supply chain runs from BHP Olympic Dam to the factory at Port Kembla and can be traced cleanly to any project site in Australia. For a project team managing the documentation load that comes with a complex commercial build, that traceability has genuine practical value, not just at completion but across the life of the asset.

Made Here, Available Here

A whopping 87% of Kembla tube is manufactured in Port Kembla and distributed through a national merchant network of over 2,000 locations, which means delivery certainty, consistent availability and technical support from a team that works to Australian standards and understands the conditions Australian projects actually face.

A supplier who can commit to consistent supply, respond quickly to specification queries and provide documentation without international turnarounds, is in a different proposition to an importer, particularly when the project is running to a tight schedule.

Kembla has been doing this since 1916. The institutional knowledge that comes with over a century of manufacturing copper tube in the same place, for the same market, is part of what gets specified when the project is too important to leave anything to chance.

Project Warranties & One-system Certainty

With so much at stake, designers, developers and installers must have complete confidence in the piping systems that seamlessly deliver the plumbing, HVAC, refrigeration and medical gas services to developments of scale. These systems lie hidden behind walls, often behind expensive finishes, where the risk and cost of any failure increases.

Kembla provides individualised, project-specific warranties for large-scale developments to encourage peace of mind when choosing Australian copper. Project coordinators and installers are also backed by Kembla’s renowned technical and training support teams on large-scale projects, meaning purposeful support on the ground, when it’s needed.

By using an MM Kembla Integrated Piping system, the risk reduces. MM Kembla hosts a range of high quality products for plumbing, HVAC, refrigeration and medical gas services. One brand, one system, backed by one warranty from an Australian company with a renowned reputation for quality, reliability and service for over 100 years.
